Q

Does Medicaid look at my individual income and assets when evaluating eligibility for my spouse?

A

Yes, Medicaid considers spouses as one and therefore the income and assets of both will be counted and looked at.

Q

How much in assets can be in my name if my spouse is on Medicaid?

A

Outright you can keep approximately $109,000 without Medicaid being able to ask for a penny. Anything above $109,000 Medicaid reserves the right to come back in the future and ask you to contribute for your spouse’s care. However, you can always try to negotiate with Medicaid when they ask for the contribution and most instances (presently) they only ask one time and never again.

Q
Can I be eligible for Institutional Medicaid if I own a home and my spouse resides there while I am in the Nursing Home?
A
Yes, your spouse is allowed to reside in the home and Medicaid will not consider it an available asset.

Q
Can my PCP follow me while I am at a skilled nursing facility?
A
Yes - If your physician is not on staff he may fill out a credentialing packet with the facility and follow you during your stay.

Q
How do I get into a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation?
A
You may contact the facility directly or let your hospital discharge planner know what your preference is.

Q
How long during the day will I be in therapy?
A
Each therapy program is designed individually to meet your functional needs and goals. Depending upon your endurance and tolerance, your therapist will design a program just for you with your Physician's involvement.

Q
How long will my rehab last?
A
This is highly individualized. Despite having average length of stays for various diagnosis; each person has their own rate of recovery and response to rehab. Your prior level of function is a good barometer that your therapist and rehab team will use to gauge your recovery.

Q
How much monthly income can I keep if my spouse is in a nursing home?
A
You can keep approximately $2,739 in income per month outright (of which you can borrow from spouse’s income if you don’t make that yourself) and also all your income above that, except that Medicaid reserves the right to take a portion of the income above $2,739 that you earn.

Q
How often will I have therapy?
A
Every resident will be given a specific schedule of their therapy. This will allow you to give family and friends a time that they can come and visit that would not be during a therapy time.
